{"id":183,"date":"2013-08-21T23:30:05","date_gmt":"2013-08-21T23:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gordongunnmd.com\/womens_wellness\/?p=183"},"modified":"2019-05-11T18:59:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-12T01:59:20","slug":"new-model-to-predicting-cancer-in-women-fullerton-ca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/gordongunnmd.com\/womens_wellness\/new-model-to-predicting-cancer-in-women-fullerton-ca\/","title":{"rendered":"New Model to predicting cancer in Women | Fullerton, CA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-42\" alt=\"Branch of dogwood blossoms against a dark background\" src=\"\/\/gordongunnmd.com\/womens_wellness\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock_000001621430XSmall-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/gordongunnmd.com\/womens_wellness\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock_000001621430XSmall-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/gordongunnmd.com\/womens_wellness\/wp-content\/uploads\/iStock_000001621430XSmall.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Scientists have developed a new model that can predict a woman&#8217;s risk of developing <strong>breast, ovarian<\/strong> and <strong>endometrial<\/strong> (womb) <strong>cancer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The model uses easily obtainable information on known risk factors for these <strong>cancers<\/strong>, according to the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers developed these models by using data from two large US studies that included white, non-Hispanic women aged over 50 years and by including commonly known risk factors, such as parity (the number of children a women delivered), body mass index (an indicator of the amount of body fat), use of oral contraceptives, and menopausal status and use of menopausal hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers said the new models are able to predict individual women&#8217;s risk of each <strong>cancer<\/strong>.\u00a0 For instance, individual women&#8217;s risk for <strong>endometrial cancer<\/strong> calculated using this model ranged from 0.5% to 29.5% over the next 20 years depending on their exposure to various risk factors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These models predict absolute risks for <strong>breast<\/strong>, <strong>endometrial<\/strong>, and <strong>ovarian<\/strong> <strong>cancers<\/strong> from easily obtainable risk factors and may assist in clinical decision-making,&#8221; researchers wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Limitations are the modest discriminatory ability of the breast and ovarian models and that these models may not generalize to women of other races,&#8221; they added.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"\/\/www.plosmedicine.org\/article\/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pmed.1001492\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">findings are published in the journal <em>PLOS Medicine<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact Dr. Gordon C.
