But there are a few changes we can make to our diets that can help prevent heart disease:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whole grains.<\/strong> A study by the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/wholegrainscouncil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Whole Grains Council (opens in a new tab)\">Whole Grains Council<\/a><\/em> proved that replacing refined grains with whole grains can lower the risk of heart disease by up to 28 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leafy greens.<\/strong> Greens such as kale and spinach are\ngreat sources of fiber, antioxidants, and other vitamins and minerals that contribute\nto heart health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Extra-virgin olive oil.<\/strong> This healthy fat can make a\ngreat heart-healthy substitute for butter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Raw, unsalted almonds and walnuts.<\/strong> A \u00bc cup a day can\nboost your protein and lower your cholesterol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tomatoes.<\/strong> This veggie is high in antioxidants that\nprotect the heart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fish.<\/strong> Fish are high in Omega-3s, which are known to\nbenefit the heart. Many doctors recommend adding fish to your diet at least a\ncouple times a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beans and lentils.<\/strong> Versatile and extremely healthy,\nbeans and lentils are a great way to add fiber, protein, and iron to almost any\nmeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grapes.<\/strong> In addition to antioxidants, they also\nprovide phytochemicals that protect the cardiovascular system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Berries.<\/strong> Filled with fiber and antioxidants, berries\nmake great, heart-healthy desserts any time of the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dark chocolate.<\/strong> Adding just a little bit of dark chocolate to those berries and you\u2019ve got yourself a divine, guilt-free dessert.
